What to see in Chiang Rai, from temples to the Mekong
What to see in Chiang Rai goes far beyond the White Temple: art museums, night markets, tea hills, a royal garden and the river border. Here is a plan for your days.

The temples you should not miss
Chiang Rai's temples are its signature, and the obvious place to start is Wat Rong Khun. TAT calls the White Temple, with its silver roofs, a masterpiece of National Artist Chalermchai Kositpipat and an open art gallery; it sits on Highway 1, 15 km from the city centre.101 Go early, as TAT has reported about 10,000 visitors a day.11
Closer to town, the Blue Temple, Wat Rong Suea Ten, is a hall of blue with fine architecture and murals where visitors pay homage to the Buddha images.2 A short ride away, Wat Huay Pla Kang has a Guan Yin statue 69 meters tall with a lift inside to a panoramic view, and a 9-story chedi in Chinese and Lanna style.312
In the old city, Wat Ming Muang is worth a quiet visit. Airports of Thailand explains that it is also called Wat Chang Moub, after the crouching elephant that is its symbol, and that the Emerald Buddha image was once brought from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai.13 It shows the older, Lanna side of a city better known for its modern temples.

Museums and art: Baan Dam and beyond
Baan Dam, the Black House, is the essential art stop. Thawan Duchanee, born in Chiang Rai in 1939, built it in Nang Lae District and lived and worked there until his death in 2014.1617 Airports of Thailand describes a group of Lanna houses painted black, filled with buffalo horns, antlers, animal skins and carved wood, open from 09.00 to 17.00.4
For Lanna heritage, the Oub Kham Museum on Na Khai Road holds old pieces from the northern kingdom and opens every day from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.18 It makes a good rainy-afternoon visit and puts the temples you have seen into a longer history. Look for the old lacquerware, silver and court clothing, and give yourself time to read the labels; the craft on show is the same tradition that the modern temple builders drew on.
Chiang Rai also has a lively contemporary scene. The Art Station, Khua Silpa, on Phahonyothin Road was set up by local artists as a gallery and meeting place, and opens every day from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.19 Pair it with Baan Dam for a day of art away from the big tour groups.

Where to start in Chiang Rai
Match the sight to what you enjoy most.
Wat Ming Muang is also called Wat Chang Moub, which means crouching elephant. Because the temple uses the image of an elephant as the symbol. In the past, the Emerald Buddha image was brought from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai.
Chiang Rai tourist attractions after dark
Evenings are when the city relaxes. The Chiang Rai Night Bazaar, in an old bus station area on Prasopsuk Road, opens every day from 6:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., with souvenirs, local products, Thai dancing and Lanna crafts.5 Come hungry and take your time at the food stalls. Grab a table near the stage, order a few dishes to share, and watch the dancers between courses; it is the easiest evening in the city.
Weekends add the walking streets. On Saturdays the walking street on Thanalai Road, near the Clock Tower, opens from 5:30 p.m. with local products, food and busking performances.6 On Sundays the walking street on San Khong Noi Road runs from 16.00 to 23.30, with stalls and local performances on a stage in the centre.21
They are Chiang Rai tourist attractions in the truest sense, because they belong to the people who live here. Plan your stay so that at least one evening falls on a weekend, bring small notes, and leave room in your bag for a few handmade souvenirs from the northern hills.

Further out: Doi Tung, Singha Park and the hot springs
North of the city, Doi Tung is a cool escape. The Doi Tung Royal Villa of the late Princess Mother stands 1,630 metres above sea level and was built in 1987, and next to it the Tree Top Walk in Mae Fah Luang Garden is a 300-metre walkway 30 metres up among the trees.715 A round of the walk takes 20 to 30 minutes.25
Nearby, Phra That Doi Tung has two golden relic chedis side by side in Lanna style.26 Closer to town, TAT calls Singha Park Thailand's largest tea plantation, producing over 400 tonnes of Oolong tea a year, with cycling, a zip line and a petting zoo with giraffes and zebras.827
On the road south towards Chiang Mai, Mae Khachan Hot Spring is the first stop on the classic day trip, and visitors soak their feet and boil eggs in separate wells there.22 TAT also notes that trekking tours to the hill tribes remain one of the purest local experiences in the province.28
The Golden Triangle and the Mekong
The Golden Triangle is the classic day out from Chiang Rai: the point in Chiang Saen where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet, at the confluence of the Khong and Ruak rivers.9 It lies more than 70 km from Chiang Rai city, within a 1.30-hour drive.23
Airports of Thailand suggests a long-tail boat ride on the Khong River and a photo at the Golden Triangle sign.1429 It also explains the name: the area was once a large opium-producing region where opium was traded for gold.20 The museums nearby tell that story.
Further east, the Mekong forms the border at Chiang Khong in Chiang Rai province and Huay Xai in Laos.30 If your trip continues into Laos, Chiang Rai is the natural place to break the journey, and the river towns make a peaceful last night in Thailand. Even if you are not crossing, an evening by the Mekong, watching the boats and the light on the far bank, is one of the quiet pleasures of the north.
How many days in Chiang Rai you need
How many days in Chiang Rai depends on how much of the province you want. With one day, take a full tour from the city: the day sold on this page visits the White and Blue Temples, Baan Dam, a Long Neck Karen village, Choui Fong Tea Farm, the Golden Triangle and the House of Opium, from 8:00 AM to around 6:00 to 6:30 PM.
With a second day, split the sights. Spend the first on the temples and Baan Dam at your own pace, with the Night Bazaar in the evening, and the second on the Golden Triangle, Doi Tung or a tea plantation. That rhythm leaves time for long lunches and the afternoon rain in the wet months.
With a longer stay, slow down further: add the Oub Kham Museum and the Art Station, a weekend walking street, a bicycle ride through the countryside or a trek to the hill villages. Chiang Rai rewards those who stay, because its pleasures are small and spread out rather than packed into a single famous street.
When to visit and how the weather changes plans
The cool, dry months are the most comfortable. In Chiang Rai city January averages a high of 28.6 °C and a low of 13.5 °C, and December a high of 27.7 °C.31 Mornings in the hills, at Doi Tung and the Golden Triangle, can be cool, so pack a light layer.
The heat peaks in April, with an average high of 34.6 °C, when early starts and shaded midday breaks make sightseeing easier.31 By the Thai Meteorological Department's reckoning, the 2026 wet season arrived on May 15.32
August is the soggiest month: 374 mm, spread over 18 days that each pass 2.5 mm.31 Rainy days suit museums, cafés and the covered Night Bazaar; save the open viewpoints and the boat ride for the drier mornings, and keep an umbrella in your day bag.
