What the Golden Triangle is, and why it draws people
The Golden Triangle is the spot in Chiang Saen where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet, at the confluence of the Khong (Mekong) and Ruak rivers.1 Standing on the Thai bank, you look across the water at Laos on one side and Myanmar on the other, a map lesson made real. The rivers are wide and slow here, cargo boats and long-tails pass in both directions, and on a clear day the hills of all three countries line the horizon.
The name has a darker history. Airports of Thailand explains that the area was once a large opium-producing region where opium was traded for gold and was as valuable as gold.3 Today it is a border trade and tourism area, and the museums nearby tell that story. Knowing it before you arrive changes how you see the busy riverside: what is now a photo stop was once the heart of a trade that shaped the whole region.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand's road-trip route of the same name runs from Chiang Rai through Mae Sai to Sop Ruak, and it pairs the White Temple with the history of the opium trade.4 That pairing is what the organised tours here sell: temples first, the Mekong later in the day.

What you do there: viewpoints, signs and boats
There are two viewpoints over the meeting of the rivers. One is on the hill of Wat Phra That Pha Ngao and the second is just below it, and both have official signposts for photos.15 The big Golden Triangle sign by the river is the classic photo stop.6
Airports of Thailand suggests visiting Wat Phra That Doi Pu Khao and taking a long-tail boat ride on the Khong River to see riverside life and the scenery.7 The boats run along the water where the countries meet, and the 8-hour tour from Chiang Rai gives its ride 30 minutes.
Nearby museums cover the opium story. Several Chiang Rai day tours stop for 30 minutes at the House of Opium. A separate museum, the Hall of Opium Museum in Chiang Saen, appeared in a 2014 TAT newsroom list of Thailand's top 10 museums.8

A Golden Triangle day from Chiang Mai
From Chiang Mai the Golden Triangle makes a very long day, because it lies well beyond Chiang Rai. The tour sold on this page is a small group limited to 12, with guides in English and Thai, from $75 and with 1,801 reviews averaging 4.55.
Its route is packed. After 75 minutes it stops at Mae Kachan Hot Spring, then drives 105 minutes to Wat Rong Khun, has lunch at a local restaurant, visits Wat Rong Suea Ten, Baan Dam Museum and a Long Neck Karen village, then drives 1 hour to the Golden Triangle for a visit and a long-tail boat ride. The van ride back to Chiang Mai takes 4 hours.
Another day from Chiang Mai combines the White Temple and the Golden Triangle in 13.5 hours, from $75, with 1,196 reviews. If you want the river border and cannot spare a night in Chiang Rai, these are two of the options; if you can stay over, start from Chiang Rai instead and enjoy a shorter, calmer day.

A Golden Triangle tour from Chiang Rai
Starting in Chiang Rai halves the driving. A Golden Triangle tour from Chiang Rai with a Mekong boat trip runs 8 hours in a small group limited to 9, from $69, rated 4.94 from 177 reviews. It suits people who care more about the river than the temples.
Its route, as listed: 40 minutes by car to a Long Neck Karen village, 30 minutes to Choui Fong Tea Farm, 30 minutes to Wat Tham Pla, the Fish Cave Temple, 40 minutes to the Golden Triangle, a 30-minute river boat ride, the House of Opium, and 50 minutes back to Chiang Rai.
The seven-site days add the temples instead of the boat. The highlights day with a free lunch buffet spends 40 minutes at the Golden Triangle, and the Mekong view buffet day and the all-tickets day 30 minutes each, all from Chiang Rai. Another day gives it a full hour.
Going on your own by bus or car
You do not need a tour to reach the Golden Triangle. Airports of Thailand gives the distance as more than 70 km from Chiang Rai city, within a 1.30-hour drive, and says the green public bus on the Chiang Rai - Chiang Saen line runs there for 40 baht per person, with a note to check the fare with the staff.2
By bus you get off in Chiang Saen and continue to the viewpoints locally, so allow a full day and leave early. A hired car or a ride-hailing car gives you more freedom to add Doi Tung, where the Tree Top Walk in Mae Fah Luang Garden is a 300-metre walkway 30 metres up among the trees.19
Going alone costs less but you lose the guide who explains the border and the opium history. If you are curious about that history, a tour with a museum stop is worth the extra. If you mainly want the view and a boat ride, the bus and a local long-tail boat are enough. Agree the boat fare and the length of the ride before you step aboard, and ask the boatman to point out which bank belongs to which country.
When to go and what to expect from the river
Airports of Thailand lists the Golden Triangle as a place to visit all year round, and says the scenery is at its best in the morning, when the sun rises through the fog.209 The tours compared here reach it after the temples, later in the day, so an early start from Chiang Rai on your own is the way to catch that light.
The weather shapes the trip as much as the season. In Chiang Rai city January averages a high of 28.6 °C and a low of 13.5 °C, while August brings 374 mm of rain over 18 days of 2.5 mm or more.21 The river runs higher and browner in the wet months.
Expect a busy riverside with souvenir stalls and photo spots rather than a remote wilderness. Airports of Thailand mentions shopping for clothes, jewellery, handmade goods and imported products from neighbouring countries.22 Go for the view, the boats and the history, and treat the shopping as a side show.
Choosing your Golden Triangle day
Choose by where you sleep. From Chiang Mai, the small-group day sold on this page is one that reaches the river with a boat ride, at the cost of a very long day. From Chiang Rai, you can pick between the boat day and the seven-site days that add the temples. Both pick you up in town, so you can spend the evening before at the Night Bazaar and still be fresh for the drive north.
Choose by what you want to see. If temples matter, a seven-site day gives you the White and Blue Temples, Baan Dam and the Golden Triangle together. If the river matters most, the 8-hour boat day spends more of its time in the border country.
Whatever you book, bring your passport or a copy, keep cash for small fees, and respect the temples you visit along the way. The Mekong will not disappoint: watching boats drift between the three countries makes a border feel very real.
Your temple day
